COOKIES CAN BE MORE THAN COOKIES
🍪 The Sweet Start 🍪
I wanted to create a quick teaching moment in the LONG days of summer with kids at home. Instead of making cookies by myself for the 2000x time I made a quick decision to invite Nathan in the kitchen to help, and to my surprise, he was happy to participate! We had a great time and I realized that it can be a great way to teach our kiddos some essential skills!
Lets take a look at the steps:
- Following Instructions: Simple recipes help kids learn to follow directions and understand sequences.
- Measuring Ingredients: We practiced math skills by measuring ingredients, and computing fractions which helps make math fun and practical.
- Mixing and Patience: Mixing ingredients can help kids develop fine motor skills and teach patience.
- Timing and Watching: Setting a timer and waiting for cookies to bake taught him about time management, patience, and delayed gratification
More Than Just Baking
Baking cookies can build confidence, improved communication, and strengthen bonds. It can become a part of our schedules at home - and a way to help our kiddos build some amazing skills!
Some extra tips:
Start Simple: Begin with easy recipes.Be Patient: Allow your child to take their time.
Make It Fun: Keep the mood light and enjoyable.
Encourage Independence: Let your child do as much as they can on their own.
Celebrate Together: Enjoy the cookies and celebrate the effort.
I hope this gets you thinking of the small things we can do at home to shake up the regular activities that we may rely on that can teach our kiddos skills that they can use outside of the home.
Happy baking! 💜 Emily
